Going About it the Wrong Way...
I cannot say that I go to all lengths to ensure our environment's health; however, I do care and I do what I can on a daily basis. Environmentalism is one of the most popular topics today in our world. One of the questions surrounding it and creating quite a controversy is how much longer can our planet sustain us? Does it matter? Why do we need to put a dead-line on it? We're currently doing things which are hindering our chances of remaining here... one of them is population control... I mean the lack thereof. The obvious ones are the machines we build to sustain ourselves with that leave gases and other strange toxins laying around our world for everyone and no one to deal with. The more people inhabiting this planet, the more we need to remember to think of solutions before creating such wonders of technology.
Tires. Tires are a good example. I recently had a conversation about tires with my dad while passing a community garbage dump. My mom suddenly wanted to know why there were never tires in the dumps. My dad replied that there was no real way of getting rid of them because they were made of rubber a material which some scientists will gladly debate is one of mankind's greatest needs aside from water and air. So, in talking, we discussed what they do with tires when there's nothing that can be done with them anymore. Some places chop them up and bury them while others try to melt or insinerate them whole or chopped. This doesn't really solve the problem; however, because it takes a really really long time to burn them.
This brings me to my point. At the University of Wisconsin Madison, a team has been researching for decades on how to properly and environmentally safely dispose of tires once they cannot be used anymore. They have spent decades... and a lot of money doing this. Sometimes I feel that this is when people need to take a hint. Maybe there is no solution but, before mass producing something that has such a little lifetime and cannot be destroyed safely, maybe, just maybe, they should not make it in the first place. Now, you're thinking there would be no tires. Well, no. What I'm saying is that if that material doesn't work out, we should find one that does. It would save us a lot of time, money, trouble, and environment doing so.
